West Caicos - Dives 1 & 2

Dive day! On the boat bright and early we headed 1.5 hours south and west of Provo toward West Caicos for our first dives.

Running all along West Caicos is a steep shelf they call the wall. It makes for great diving because you get a mix of deeper water creatures like Caribbean reef sharks, hawksbill turtles, and crustacea...

Squirrelfish

Mid-depth dwellers like lionfish, horseshoe star worms, and a wide diversity of coral...

And shallow reef fishes.

And the usual "whale poop" (sea cucumbers) and conch leaving contrails.

Our dives were up to 85ft (26m) deep for a max dive time of an hour.

On the boat ride back, we saw a nearly completed resort on the otherwise deserted island. It has condos, villas, and a central resort building complete with air landing strip and harbour but West Caicos is completely uninhabited. It seems the development got underway right before he housing crash of 2008 and developers ran out of money. It has been sitting idle and empty ever since.

Not much time left in a day after boat trips and diving. Just hung out at the local Dive Bar for tacos and beer.
