Aiming for Ecuador - Pivot!!

Oh my glob it’s actually happening! The trip that has been roughly 3 years in the making is underway! My sister and I decided in the summer of 2019 that we were going to take a dream scuba trip to the Galápagos Islands.

However, like so many others, our best laid plans got waylaid in the face of a global pandemic. I was a heading back to school to start my education degree, she was living in Calgary hoping to move in with her boyfriend and our parents were getting ready to hop a cruise to Antarctica. We were so excited for a summer of adventure together!

Well, the bad news is COVID-19 happened, delaying our plans for an indeterminate time. The beautiful news is I graduated, got a puppy and am now a teacher.

My parents just barely made it home from South America before the world shut down. I questioned why they ever wanted to get off the boat - no COVID, full bar and buffet, water sports, movies and lectures - while we were all stuck isolating at home.

My sister and her then boyfriend moved in together, got engaged, got married and are expecting a baby (no diving for her now!). In case you’re wondering why pregnant people cannot dive, it has to do with the fetus’s inability to filter out nitrogen which science discovered during some truly unsettling experiments on sheep in hyperbaric chambers.

Years later, we are healthy and ready to head out into the world again. Minus Erin and baby eggplant (the fetus’s current size).

We have somewhat meticulously planned this trip as we have had years to decide on an itinerary. So of course there’s immediately a wrench in the works requiring us to PIVOT! PIVOOOOT!

It seems there are protests in Old Town Quito where we had planned a walking tour. No ordinary walking tour. One with a mission. A mission to find me a Panama hat (which, despite the name, are made in Ecuador). How dare civil demonstrations and the political process come between me and a hood hat!

Instead of a cultural walking tour through a historic town centre, I guess we will do something less dangerous like climb a volcano.

Wish us luck on the last leg of flights and our arrival in Quito.
