Holy Mola Mola! Sunfish, Batfish and Mantas!
The ocean sunfish, or Mola Mola, is the heaviest and largest bony fish in the world. They can reach up to 11 feet from fin tip to tip and weigh up to 2.5 tons. And we are determined to find one at the fishy spa today.
Mola Mola come to a specific point off Isabela called Punta Vincente Roca. They hang out about 60 feet down and off a wall, cruising by so cleaner wrasse can pick off parasites. It’s here we hugged the wall and waited with fingers crossed for the prehistoric looking behemoth fish to emerge from the big blue. We were in luck! We saw two! Mola Mola Mola Mola?
We were unbelievably lucky because right after our Mola Molas , a giant mantra cruised by! I was so stoked about the second Mola I almost missed it.
We dove again in the evening with the goal of seeing another of the strangest fish out there: a red-lipped batfish. Again, Punta Vincente Roca did not disappoint! The little weirdo showed up right on cue to wriggle through the sandy shallows and delight us with his comical appearance.
A some now familiar faces were spotted as we cruised around a shelf on the wall.
