Day 18 - Varanasi departure

Sleep, glorious sleep! This morning a group of us headed to Blue Lassi for breakfast. Okay, I totally had my doubts about this place as it was quite a trek to get there, it was difficult to find, and it looked like a hole in the wall. However, after eating a pomegranate and banana lassi and an apple and guava lassi, I am a believer. It was delicious! They made the yogourt in house, the fruit was all seasonal, it came in a large clay pot, and you ate it with a small wooden spoon. One of the guys on the trip had four.

Jill and I set off on a mission that morning: BUY ALL THE STUFF! I got all my remaining items on my India checklist and more. We started in a sari shop where Jill selected beautiful fabric and got fitted for the remaining items by the tailor. He told us to return in two or three hours, meaning after 3:30 that afternoon. Jill and I found a bangle shop in a back alley. Buying bangles was a hoot! The shopkeeper kept pulling colours and designs, showing off different combinations and styles. Danger!

It was spice market central too!
When we finished buying bangle man out, a different shopkeeper took us a few blocks over to a great alley bazaar. We got a toy (for a certain nephew), spices, scarves, anklets, tea... Time to break out the duffle bag! I think I also visited the most popular ATM in Varanasi when I went to get more rupees. Grabbing a spicy, peanut samosa, we tucked in to get some henna done at a small shop. Despite losing pieces and having my design smudged by passers by, my design turned out quite well. It was incredible to watch this man make such accurate and detailed designs out of a drippy tube of paste. Plus, he did my design in about 5 minutes flat! It would take me days to try and trace and he just blew through it. Poof and it was done.

In the afternoon, we sat by the Ganga for a few serene minutes before heading back to the hotel and our last overnight train. Our train departed on time but there is incredible smog/fog across the country side right now that may cause delays. Off to Delhi and the end of this adventure.
