The Road to Hana

It's probably the most highly advertised activity in Maui, but it's honestly not high on my list. I think the Road to Hana is worth doing, but it also needs to be done right.

I would suggest doing the Road to Hana by tour bus or guided. It is a very long drive along winding roads with few places to stop. The views are great, but you can't get out or take pictures usually because the traffic is bumper to bumper. And there is nothing really in the town of Hana. I know there are amazing waterfalls, nature parks, and key attractions along the way, but they are tricky to find and it's an exhausting drive.

If you do brave the road on your own, buy banana bread at the shops along the way, check out the Ka Eleku Cavern and visit some of the exquisite beaches. I recommend Hana Beach Park or Waianapanapa State Park, a beautiful black sand beach. You can also visit Hale Piilani, the state’s largest heiau (Hawaiian temple), in Kanahu Gardens.

You will be advised by your rental car company not to take the road all the way around Haleakala, but to turn back and take the Road to Hana back. The road is dangerous during certain seasons due to flooding and debris, but it has been much improved since the days of being a one-lane gravel road. A couple of friends have taken the road all the way around with no or minimal problems.
