Sayonara

Hey ladies and gents,

Since I'm less than one week out from my next adventure, it's time I fired up the ol' blog. I'll give you three guesses as to where I'm headed this time. Oh, you need some hints do you?

      1. The population of this island country is around 127 million

      2. It is also known as The Land of the Rising Sun

      3. It is home to more than 200 volcanoes

      4. The first novel on record was written here in the year 1007

      5. The country consists of 6,852 islands

That's right... I'm off to Japan!

Along with my friend of 12-plus years, Jeff Dickson, I'll be starting with a 12-day tour with G Adventures called the Backroads of Japan. Shout out to Blair Cowieson at Flight Centre in Energy Plaza for all your help with the booking, securing our discounts, and taking care of the extra accommodation after the tour. When booking your next adventure, consider talking to Flight Centre (link on the right under resources).

We'll be starting in Tokyo before moving on to Nagano, Matsumoto, Takayama, and Kurishiki. The tour ends in Kyoto before I take off for part two of my trip. Highlights of our tour include Modern Tokyo Walking Tour, Jigokudani Monkey Hot Springs, Zenkoji Temple, Matsumoto castle, Kibi Plains Bike Ride, Kyoto Temples. Oh, and of course eating so much sushi that I become a feared ocean predator.

Map of the route for Backroads of Japan

After the whirlwind tour of mainland Japan, this is where JD and I part ways. I'm off on a simple bus, plane, bus, train, ferry ride to the island of Akajima for a few days of scuba in the big blue Pacific and he's going to climb a mountain/volcano or something crazy.

It took a lot of work by an amazing agent at Adventure Travel in Calgary to get me to an island, get me geared up to scuba, and get me an English dive guide. I've added Adventure Travel to the resources links on the right of the page. Next time you want to book something ridiculous and insanely difficult, give Adventure Travel a call and they'll rock it!

I couldn't find a good map, so you'll have to zoom waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay in on this Google Map to see Aka Island in relation to mainland Japan and Taiwan http://goo.gl/maps/egSuk

"Akajima is one of the most beautiful island in the Kerama Island group, a short ferry journey from mainland Okinawa, Akajima offers remote beaches, primeval forests and some great observation towers to see the island's unspoilt beauty. It is also connected by bridge to the islands of Geruma and Fukaji which can also be easily explored by foot, bicycle or kayak. If you are lucky you may see deer swimming between the three islands. From January to April the waters also attract humpback whales which provide a stunning natural spectacle adding to the natural charm of the Kerama Islands."

I'll be stopping for a day of exploration in Okinawa before flying back to Tokyo and home to Calgary.

You may have noticed I've made some enhancements to my blog, hopefully making it easier to comment, to follow and to share. I've also upgraded my iPod so I'll be able to post pictures with the blog as I go.

Stay in touch and I hope you enjoy the adventures to come!
