Tambopata - Finally Getting it Right

Finally connecting with the rest of the group, we packed our small duffle bag and were off to the jungle again. For real this time.

Everyone boarded a bus and were handed a pack lunch - chicken nuggets, yuca fries, rice and mixed veggies - to chow down as we started the one-hour ride to the port. The boat launch was in a small native village called Infierno (Hell). Apparently, the Andean settlers that migrated down to the amazon found it so difficult to live they named it hell.

On to the boat! We zoomed two hours down the Tambopata river, stopping to see some Pipi (pee-pee) monkeys, a family of capybaras with four babies, and another congregation of capybaras.

At the lodge we enjoyed a cool glass of star fruit juice and went over the evening itinerary. Or cabin and room is great!

After dinner, we went for a short night walk to look for nocturnal creatures around the lodge grounds. We saw a couple large spiders, stick insects making babies, a giant tree frog, a big lizard asleep on a tree trunk, a sleeping motmot bird, a kincachu (I couldn't get a picture because he was too high in the canopy), a tarantula in her den, and a little skinny snake.

Time for a good nights sleep because it's up at 6 am to check out an oxbow lake - a river path that was isolated and became a small lake.

P.S. It is late at night and POURING out! I bet it's going to be a wet day in the rainforest tomorrow.

  1. Please bring me home a capybara. It'll love the cold climate of Alberta. I'm sure they can live off of nacho chips, right?
